Science

Our school Science program runs as a two year sequence based on the Victorian Curriculum, incorporating the three strands; Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills. Across the year we explore the Biological, Chemical, Physical and Earth and Space Sciences. We encourage students to ask questions, develop their own investigations and work with their peers to enhance their knowledge of Science and the world around them.

Prep to Year 2

We look at the world around us. Our little scientists learn by observing and asking lots of questions. They discover nature, animals, and how things work by using their senses and doing simple experiments.

Years 3 and 4

Students learn about plants, animals, weather, and machines through more detailed studies. Through hands-on experiments, they start to guess what might happen in an experiment (making hypotheses) and then test their predictions to see the results.

Years 5 and 6

Students explore bigger ideas like material properties, types of energy, and how ecosystems function. They use their science knowledge to solve problems and understand real-life challenges.

At our school, we bring science to life by integrating spiny leaf insects, caterpillars, and chickens into our learning environment. Students have the unique opportunity to observe these creatures up close, tracking the fascinating life cycle of caterpillars as they transform into butterflies, watching spiny leaf insects cleverly camouflage themselves, and learning about the daily habits of chickens. These real-life observations help our students understand biological processes in a hands-on way, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature and science. Through caring for these animals, children also learn responsibility and the importance of nurturing living things.
